My article entitled “Partial-Response Coding, Maximum Likelihood Decoding: Capitalizing on the Analogy between Communication and Recording,” appeared in the History of Communications Column (edited by Prof. Mischa Schwartz) , IEEE Communications Magazine, March 2009, pp. 14-17. In this article I emphasize the importance that a researcher should maintain his or her interest and curiosity broad enough, not just his/her current assigned field, because an idea developed in one field often finds its useful application in other disciplines. This is how I invented 30 years ago a highly dense and highly reliable digital scheme and its signal processing technique called PRML, which is now used in virtually all magnetic and optical storage devices.
