Awards and Honors
Kobayashi is a recipient of the 2005 Technology Award from the Eduard Rhein Foundation, Germany, for his invention of a high density digital recording scheme, now widely known as PRML (partial response coding, maximum likelihood decoding), which is adopted in virtually all magnetic disk storage (of computers, PCs and iPod) and optical storage products (CDs, DVDs).
Other awards and recognition he has received include:
- IBM Invention Achievement Awards, 1971 and 1973.
- IBM Outstanding Contribution Award, “For queueing network theory and algorithms,” with Dr. Martin Reiser, 1975.
- Fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers), “For contributions to data transmission and to modeling and performance analysis of computer communication systems”, 1977.
- US Senior Scientist Award (Humboldt Prize) from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of West Germany, 1979.
- Silver Core Award from IFIP (International Federation of Information Processing), 1980.
- Marquis Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in America, 1982-present.
- IBM Japan Outstanding Contribution Award, 1984.
- Short-term Visiting Program Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, 1992.
- Elected to the Engineering Academy of Japan (Japanese counterpart of the US National Academy of Engineering), 1992.
- British Columbia Advanced Systems Institute (ASI) Visiting Fellowship, 1998.
- Life Fellow of IEEE, 2004.
- Fellow of IEICE (Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers), 2005.
